South Africa’s National Research Structure (NRF) and Department of Science and Innovation (DST) are operating in partnership with TWAS to advance science in developing nations through two doctoral fellowships: the NRF-TWAS Doctoral Fellowships and the NRF-TWAS African Renaissance Doctoral Fellowships.

Eligibility: Applicants for these fellowships need to meet the following criteria:
TWAS-NRF Doctoral Program:
be nationals of a developing nation * (besides South Africa);
should not hold any visa for temporary or long-term residency in South Africa or any developed country;
need to be a maximum of 35 years of age by 31 December of the year of application;
need to have acquired an MSc degree in a field of lives sciences;
provide proof that s/he will go back to her/his house nation on conclusion of the fellowship;
not use up other projects during the duration of her/his fellowship;
offer an official letter from a host South African institution, department or lab and motivation from the candidate’s host;
meet the list below requirements of the English Language Proficiency Academic test: IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); or TOEFL (paper) 575 (TWE 4.5); or TOEFL iBIT (minutes. 20); or Cambridge minimum 58,
present a comprehensive research study task that must be registered and authorized by the host institution and provide a letter of support from the potential host supervisor;
be financially accountable for any accompanying member of the family.
TWAS-NRF African Renaissance Doctoral Programme:
be nationals or irreversible citizens from Africa (except South Africa);
should not hold any visa for temporary or irreversible residency in South Africa or any industrialized country;
need to be an optimum of 35 years of age by 31 December of the year of application;
must have gotten an MSc degree in a field of lives sciences;
supply evidence that s/he will return to her/his house nation on completion of the fellowship;
not use up other tasks throughout the duration of her/his fellowship;
provide a main letter from a host South African organization, department or laboratory and motivation from the candidate’s host;
meet the following requirements of the English Language Proficiency Academic test: IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); or TOEFL (paper) 575 (TWE 4.5); or TOEFL iBIT (minutes. 20); or Cambridge minimum 58,
provide an in-depth research study job that should be signed up and authorized by the host institution and provide a letter of support from the prospective host supervisor;
be financially accountable for any accompanying household members.
