Cerebrospinal Meningitis is a  very serious infection that is caused by a bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. It is a very serious inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and the spinal cord(meniniges) the bacteria is usually harbored in the nose and throat and can remain with the carrier without him or her experiencing any symptoms. However, the bacteria can invade other parts of the body and spread from person-to-person by contact with respiratory and throat secretion this explains why Codjoe and Nabie (2014) can refer to it as a respiratory and contagious disease.  Symtoms are; Sudden high fever, Severe headache, Stiff Neck, increased sensitivity to light, Vomiting ,Confusion and convulsions

As at March 2017, reports showed the  following situation of CSM in Nigeria.

    • Meningitis outbreaks are currently reported in five States (Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger and Sokoto) in Northwest and Northcentral zones of Nigeria
    • As at 28th March 2017, a total of 1,966 cases with 282 deaths were reported with 109 being laboratory confirmed.
    • As at April 2 2017, affected states increased to 16 ( Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Sokoto,,Nassarawa, Jigawa, FCT, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe, Kano, Osun, Cross river, Lagos and plateau).

    The question is; WHAT NEXT?

It is very important for us to be mindful of our environment and take cautious measures in order to prevent further spread of the disease by avoiding overcrowded places, avoiding direct contact with people coughing or sneezing, allowing adequate ventilation in our houses and Seeking immediate medical help whenever symptoms of CSM are noticed and please lets not hesitate to give our children vaccinations.  We believe that with adequate meeasures taken and support fiven to and gotten from our health agencies, we will stop the spread of Cerebrospinal Meningitis.
