TS author Steven Dunn wins Goddard College / PEN North American $10,000 Scholarship

He was born and raised in West Virginia, and after 10 years in the Navy, made a B.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Denver. His work likewise has been published in Columbia Journal andGranta Publication. Mr. Dunn is co-founder of the Denver Veterans’ Writers Workshop and of a reading series in Denver that features ladies and authors of color. He also teaches at-risk youth in a bimonthly workshop about “acquiring company through telling your own story.” As a trainee in Goddard College’s MFA in Creative Writing Program, he plans to produce a body of work that attends to”the several layers of disappearance of black bodies through the lens of state-sanctioned violence and patriarchy. Through these lenses I hope to parallel historic racism with modern bigotry while paying specific attention to the resulting exhaustion and trauma of both timelines, and how those are gone through our generations.”

Elena Georgiou, Director of Goddard’s MFA in Creative Composing Program, described Mr. Dunn’s work as “piercing. His straightforward, stripped-down design allows nothing to get in the way of the story. And what is that story? It is an up-close and individual examination of how racism and sexism are perpetuated in modern-day America.”

The $10,000 Goddard/ PEN North American Scholarship is the result of a collaboration between Goddard’s MFA in Creative Composing and PEN America, PEN Canada, and PEN Mexico, which together comprise the North American branches of PEN International, the world’s preeminent literary company. Members at any level from these PEN Centers are qualified for the Goddard/PEN North American Scholarship.As the second-place recipient, hybrid author Maša Sukovic, will get a$5,000 scholarship. Ms. Sukovic is a Trainee Affiliate member of PEN America. She holds an MA and PhD from Texas A&M University and was the 2017 winner of the San Francisco Writing Contest in Adult Fiction.
